West Virginia Scholarship
Scholarship History

The West Virginia Endowment was established by Flora Burns, January 5, 2007. The first scholarship was awarded in 2008.

Flora established this endowment for a West Virginia student in honor of her ancestors. Flora Sue Hawkins was born in Davy, West Virginia. She and her family moved in 1951 to Norfolk, Virginia, but Flora carried many wonderful memories of her childhood from West Virginia.

In 2007, Flora Burns was the ESA Foundation State Counselor for West Virginia. Flora saw the financial need in West Virginia and wanted to help and established this endowment.

Flora joined ESA in 1969, pledged by Margaret Neilson, and has served in all chapter and state offices. In 1979, she served as the Virginia State President. Flora earned her First Pearl Award and has completed her 5th Degree Pallas Athene. She is a member of Beta Kappa Chapter, which was chartered in 1968 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Flora has pledged 20 members to ESA membership. Flora Burns was the ESA International Council President in 2000.

Flora is a strong supporter of the ESA Foundation and all of their projects. She served as an ESA Foundation State Counselor and on the Scholarship Processing Committee. Flora served on the ESA Foundation Board of Directors 2008-2011.
