Alpha Upsilon #1884 Oregon Scholarship
Scholarship History
The Alpha Upsilon #1884, Oregon Endowment was established by Alpha Upsilon #1884 Chapter March 23, 2001. The first scholarship was given in 2002.
Alpha Upsilon #1884 was chartered in 1952. Their members embraced the ideals of ESA; Education, Service and Association. They raised funds each year to support the local Philanthropic projects and the Oregon State project of Easterseals. In 1964, the chapter elected to split into two chapters and promote the growth of ESA in Hillsboro. New members, with new ideas, joined the chapter during the following years and the idea of awarding scholarships was born. The members decided that because ESA International was dedicated to supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and disabled children through Easterseals, Alpha Upsilon would offer scholarships to graduating seniors in the Hillsboro High School District who had a disability which might have kept them from working to earn money for college or who were unable to maintain the higher grades to be considered for Scholastic Scholarships. In the beginning, Hillsboro had one High School and in 2010 there are four, plus an Alternative High School. The chapter awards from 4-8 scholarships each year to local students.
Alpha Upsilon became a member of the ESA Foundation shortly after it was formed. Several chapter members also became ESA Foundation members. Claudia Hale became a Life member and eventually served the Foundation as an Oregon State Counselor, a committee member and an elected Director on the ESAF Board. During this time, Claudia encouraged Alpha Upsilon members to establish a scholarship through the ESA Foundation. The Alpha Upsilon President, Kathy Woodall, strongly supported the idea and helped to convince the members to donate towards this project. Thus the endowment was established.
