Hazel Knapp Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship History
The Hazel Knapp endowment was established by the Oregon Gavels Auxiliary May 1, 1990. The first scholarship was awarded in 1992.
The Oregon Gavels Auxiliary of Past Oregon State Council Presidents of ESA International honored Hazel Knapp at the 1990 Oregon State Convention in Newport, Oregon. During the surprise presentation, Oregon State Council members attending the convention rose to their feet and expressed their approval. The best part was the expression on Hazel’s face when the announcement was made. When Hazel thanked the assembly there were few dry eyes in the house. The presenter never did finish her speech that ended, “Hazel, we only did this because we love you.”
Hazel Knapp was Oregon’s first State President and served in 1947, 1948, and 1949. She held the position of International Council President 1954-53.
Hazel brought honor to the State of Oregon through her love for ESA International. She gave much time and effort to her chapter, the Oregon State Council, ESA International Council and the ESA Foundation. In 1983, Hazel was awarded the prestigious Dixie Palmer Lady Award for her dedication to the ESA Foundation. Hazel served on the ESA Foundation Board of Directors for 4, three-year terms – a total of 12 years in an elected position as well as many years serving the Board in many capacities such as state counselor, financial advisor, and parliamentarian. Hazel was a long-time avid supporter of the ESA Foundation as well as a charter member in 1970.
Hazel Knapp has left her legacy to her ESA sisters and to those who are awarded scholarships through her endowment.
